November: Diabetes Awareness Month November 17, 2021 – Posted in: cats, dogs, wellness
Just like in humans, our four-legged family members can be affected by diabetes. Did you know that 1 in 100 dogs and 1 in 50 cats are affected by diabetes?
Many different factors can cause the onset of diabetes in pets:
- Breed or genetics
- Obesity
- Diet
- Autoimmunity
- Pancreatitis
- Inflammation
- Toxins
- Vaccinations
Through a proper diet, the management of diabetes and the prevention of obesity is possible.
- Complex carbs are chains of simple sugars which, after digestion, enter the bloodstream.
- Cats and dogs as carnivores are not biologically designed to handle an excessive consumption of carbs.
- Over time, overconsumption of carbs leads to stress on the pancreas, eventually resulting in diabetes.
Whether you want to manage or prevent diabetes in your pet, look for foods with a low glycemic index (foods that release glucose slowly and steadily).
When choosing a treat for a dog or cat with diabetes, keep these 3 things in mind:
- Protein first
- Low or no carb
- Starch-free
